There was only one in the beginning. The Camaro has been produced by Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors, and was first introduced on September 29th, 1966. The Camaro was manufactured to compete with the Ford and their new launch, the Mustang. The Camaro is regarded as the Pontiac Firebird, which was also launched nearly at the same time. The radio was the media for advertisement for the Camaro, which targeted the youth. Though the word Camaro has no proper meaning, a few GM researchers found that this word in a French dictionary indicates it to be a friend or a companion. The question asked when it was first introduced was, what was the meaning of a Camaro, to which the answer was that it was a small vicious animal which ate Mustangs.
There were differences in the first generation, and in 1967 the first Camaro had three key packages. The RS, besides its appearance, had exterior rocker trim, RS badging and hidden headlights. The SS contained a 350, V-8 engine. Until the year 1968, this was the only car that had a 350 engine. The SS had non-functional air inlets placed on the hood, SS badging and special striping. Both the RS and the SS packages could be purchased. Since the Z/28 was not in the market, many customers did not know about it. Power front disc brakes, and a 4 speed transmission was needed for the Z/28 option. The car had a 302 small block V-8 engine that had been particularly designed to race in the Trans Am series. During the year 1967, only 602 of the Z/28 were sold.
The next version of the Camaro was released in 1970. The new version was different from the original one, as it was larger and wider, which made it a much heavier car. The next generation of Camaro was launched in 1982. This generation was the first to feature fuel injection, a 5 speed manual transmission, and 4 speed automatic transmission. The Camaro had 16" wheels and hatchback bodies.
On January 9th, 2006, Camaro was advertised for the new generation. The 2006 Camaro Concept was displayed by GM at the North American International Auto Show. The Camaro released in 2006 was powered by a 400HP LS2 V-8 engine. A year later, GM unveiled the new version of the 2007 Camaro at the same venue. GM Chairman and CEO, Rick Wagoner, on August 10th, 2006, said that there were plans for a new Camaro muscle car whose production might start in the end of 2008.
