A Charger concept vehicle was produced and exhibited at car shows in '65 to boost public interest in the prototype. The concept car was accepted with enthusiasm, so Dodge put it into production, and the 1966 Charger was created.
Carl Cameron styled the exterior of Dodge's new iconic car, and on the first day of 1966, Rose Bowl audiences got a glimpse of the new 'Leader of the Dodge Rebellion', the '66 Charger. Finally Dodge had the performance image to match its performance engine. The electric razor type grill utilized completely revolving headlamps last seen on a Chrysler car -- the '42 DeSoto -- which make the grill appear to be a single unit when opened or closed. The Charger opted for individual bucket seats instead of a bench seat in the back, and its console runs the full length of the car. The back seats as well as the console deck fold to the front, and the trunk separator folds backward, providing spacious interior cargo room. A lot of features were unique to the Charger, like its door panels, courtesy lights and dashboard.
Regular light bulbs are not used in the lighting of the instrument panel. In its place, 4 electrically lit dashboard pods held the tachometer, speedometer, alternator, fuel and temperature instruments. In the rear the full-length tail light spell out the word CHARGER.
Another first for the 1966 Charger -- it was the first US production vehicle to have a spoiler. David Pearson, behind the wheel of the #6 Cotten Owens-prepped Charger, was awarded the NASCAR Grand National championship in 1966 to recognize his 14 wins. The Chargers made from 1966 to 1974 were based on the Chrysler B sporty platform model, and could be custom ordered with options for high-performance. The Chrysler Cordoba was the design inspiration for the 1975 to 1978 Chargers. The Dodge Charger R/T was among the biggest of the muscle cars on the market in the decade of the Seventies.
